The primary benefits of LEDs as sources of
illumination are:
Long life:
When driven properly, a power LED can last tens of thousands of hours
with minimal degradation of the light output.
Durability: Since the LED is a solid-state device, it
can withstand shock and vibration that would damage most other light
sources.
Energy
efficiency: The typical efficacy of a power LED, is currently (2007)
in the range of 40 to 80 lumens per watt [lm/W]. This is several times
greater than that of incandescent light sources and is only exceeded
by some fluorescent light sources.
