FLUORESCENT LIGHTING: Overview

The fluorescent bulb offers a very efficient source of light. The efficacy of a light source is a measure of the light output vs. the power input. The typical efficacy range of a fluorescent bulb is 80 – 120 lm/W, which is ten times higher than the typical incandescent bulb.

A fluorescent bulb cannot be directly connected to a source of power. Fluorescent bulbs have a negative impedance characteristic when the bulb is lit. The bulb resistance will decrease as bulb current increases, resulting in a runaway effect.

A ballast circuit is required to control the amount of current in the bulb. The ballast circuit could be as simple as a resistor, but this solution would not be very efficient. An electronic ballast provides the best efficiency
