Lighting Applications Overview

Fluorescent Lighting - Many lighting systems use high-frequency, electronic-ballast compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) using ballasts to step up their frequency to 20–40 kHz, making flicker invisible and allowing the lamps to operate even more efficiently. Today’s CFLs offer excellent light output, a variety of color choices to effectively replicate incandescent light.

Dimming electronic ballast requires keeping the Power Factor Corrector (PFC) level across dimming levels even, and keeping less than 10% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to maximize it's operation.

Fairchild’s FAN7316 and FAN7317 offer the industry’s most comprehensive protection functions resulting in superior system reliability. By reducing the number of components, these devices specifically address the ever-growing need to reduce overall system cost in LCD designs.

Solid-state lighting (SSL) — A semiconductor block creates light using light-emitting diodes (LED)s as sources of illumination. SSL provides greater resistance to shock, vibration, and wear, thereby increasing its lifespan significantly. Technical issues like the LED lamp base getting incredibly hot causes rapid bulb dimming and dramatically reduces lifespan. Heat issues can be especially difficult for larger applications, which require complex system designs to dissipate heat.

LCD and Projection Displays
National’s LED driver opens the way for high-reliability LEDs to be used in large-screen liquid crystal display (LCD) television (TV) backlighting applications where a common anode approach offers a thermal advantage.

Halogen control chip overcomes reliability, performance issues
As halogen lighting remains the light choice where light quality or precise light focusing is required, the need to continuously improve on efficiency and reliability has been challenging. In particular, attention has focused on the electronic transformer at the heart of halogen lamps, which frequently becomes damaged due to overload and short-circuit fault conditions, and which also must be able to dim the lamps smoothly and continuously using a standard phase-cutting triac wall dimmer.

Blog: Everything Is Going Green with White Goods

By Tony Armstrong, Linear Technology Corp.

The popularization of the concept of “Green Environment Protection” has been in the news a great deal during recent months. As a result, many power management IC suppliers have made a lot of progress in improving power efficiency.

White Paper: LEDs and LED Driver Technology A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically forward biased, resulting in a form of electro-luminescence. The color of the emitted light depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material used, and can be near-ultraviolet, visible or infrared. LEDs are more prevalent today than ever before, replacing traditional incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lights in many applications. Unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, LEDs do not have a filament that will burn out, and they tend to run cooler. Incandescent bulbs waste 95 percent of the energy they consume as heat. Fluorescent bulbs are more efficient, but their harsh color has prevented them from fully penetrating the lighting market.

Application Note: Driving LED light bars using NXP solutions Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have been used in electronic systems for many years primarily as indicator lights on electronic devices. Recent advances in high brightness and color LEDs have made them suitable for a wide range of new applications. Today, LEDs are being used in applications in cell phones and media players for fun lighting to architectural/commercial lighting to replace conventional light sources.

Reference Design: DIGITAL ADDRESSABLE LIGHTING INTERFACE (DALI) FOR LIGHTING NETWORKS This document defines the reference design for a low-cost digitally addressable lighting interface with these features: Energy conservation, Intelligent building automation, and Master and node Control. It is based on Motorola's ultra-small but ultra-integrated MC68HC908KX8 embedded FLASH MCU, the 2-chip DALI reference design is targeted for both master and node control.

Application Note: A New Circuit for Low-Cost Electronic Ballast The goal of this design is to implement a low-cost linear ballast with good PFC, acceptable THD, and low current-crest factor. The ballast uses Passive Valley Fill configuration to reduce costs compared to standard PFC. To overcome the disadvantage of the very high current crest factor, an additional circuit has been used to modulate the half-bridge frequency versus the full bridge.

Application Note: High Frequency Ballasts in Fluorescent Lighting A ballast for a fluorescent lamp has two primary functions: Provide high initial voltage to start the lamp; and regulate lamp current during operation. Common electronic ballasts convert 60-Hz line voltage into a much higher frequency; 20 - 120KHz. The primary advantage of high-frequency fluorescent lighting is the improvement of efficacy,as also reducing lamp flicker that is sometimes associated with low-frequency ballast, as the lamp phosphors are refreshed more often.
